Twinning developed shortly after World War Two as a way of bringing ordinary people together and as a serious contribution to international understanding and world peace.
Our Twinning Association was formed in 1984 and our twin town, Plestin les Grèves, is situated in northern Brittany, conveniently only some 20 miles south of the ferry port at Roscoff!
What do we do?
We hold social events in the Launceston area and every other year we take a large group of members to Plestin for a long weekend when we stay in the homes of local people.
The hosting is on a reciprocal basis, so on alternate years we entertain a group from Plestin in our homes and Plestin hosts a visit from Launceston the following year.
These exchanges have resulted in many long-lasting family friendships being formed over the years - with invitations to weddings, christenings and celebrations on both sides of the Channel.
During the regular exchanges between our two groups we visit fascinating places of scenic, cultural and leisure interest and enjoy wining and dining in both informal and formal settings.
Our twinning association is run by members and we raise all our own funds through a wide range of social activities, such as
Wine and wisdom quiz evenings,
Film + meal evenings of French film (with English subtitles) and French-themed dinner
Murder mystery evenings
Barbecues and summer teas
Over the years many community groups in the two towns have taken part in exchange visits, including football, tennis and badminton clubs and choirs and bands.
Annual membership is £15 for families and £7.50 for individuals. A bonus of visiting Brittany by coach with the twinning association is that ferry crossings are at a discounted rate.
